Hass Avocado

Avocado is a versatile fruit! It can be enjoyed in so many ways. You can eat it fresh, grill, fry, puree, or bake it. Avocado is perfect for soups, salads, sides, entrees and drinks!

Nutrition

Sometimes dismissed as nutrition zero, avocado is actually a nutrition hero! A study conducted showed that people who ate an avocado a day for a week saw a total cholesterol drop by 17%. Avocado is also a good source of heart-healthy fiber and contains a significant amount of potassium.

Tips

Selecting

Choose avocado that is unblemished and heavy for its size. Avocado that yields to gentle finger pressure is ripe and ready to eat, but if the finger leaves a dent, the avocado may be overripe.

Preparing the fruit

Wash the avocado thouroughly before cutting or slicing. Cut the fruit in half, from top (narrow portion) to bottom. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut through the outher layer of the skin. Holding the avocado in the palm of one hand, use your other hand to twist and rotate the two halves apart. Scoop out the seed with a spoon. You can scoop the flesh or cut the avocado into wedges then peel away the skin. Skin is easy to peel when the avocado is fully ripe.

HARVEST TIME LINE

Growing sunshine takes knowledge, patience, and passion. Our fruits are cultivated and harvested with the utmost care and precision by the hands of our hardworking farmers.

Our pineapples are grown through the help of the precise knowledge of our scientists and the passionate hands of our farmers. The principle cultivation and harvesting of Dole Pineapples is done in the fertile soils of Mindanao, Philippines. With its perfect temperatures and plentiful sunshine all year round it’s a great place to plant pineapples.

The entire harvest and packing process ensures that the pineapples arrive at their respective markets in their peak condition.

Pineapple Propagation

Pineapple seed comes largely from the same fields that recently produced fruit, in the form of crowns removed from fruit utilized in the cannery and from vegetative regrowth produced by the mother plant. These are removed, precisely classified by size, and then planted onto raised beds on land carefully prepared for pineapple production with optimum soil tilth, drainage, and erosion control.

1

Growing and Harvest

It takes around 16 months for the pineapples to be ready for harvest. During that time the plants are carefully tended by our farmers while they grow to a size where they can produce a desirable fruit. Each plant produces only one fruit during this time period so it is important to take great care to nurture them continuously. Harvesting pineapples is done by hand with the help of specially built boom harvesters. Our hand pickers go through thousands of pineapple fruits, row upon row, choosing the best fruits at the correct level of ripeness. Several harvest rounds are required over 1-2 weeks to ensure that all the fruit is harvested at its peak. A pineapple fruit does not ripen further after being removed from the plant, so Dole expertise in this operation ensures that you the customer receive and enjoy our fruit at its best moment.

2

Packing

After harvesting the pineapples, they are transported to a Dole packhouse in specially designed bins, unloaded with great care and then washed thoroughly to remove any minor dust that might be on the fruit from its time in the open fields. The pineapples are then properly sorted, labelled, boxed, and packed per market. After packing, they are cooled and then transported to Dole’s cold storage facilities at the wharf or container shipping port in refrigerated containers.

3

Shipping

At Dole’s cold storage facilities in Davao, the packed pineapples are stored in cool temperatures to maintain their freshness. They are then loaded in refrigerated ships to be distributed to various markets around Asia and the Middle East.

Banana Propagation

In Dole’s biotech laboratories, banana suckers are carefully sliced and grown under laboratory conditions for weeks to prevent diseases from infecting the plants. This process also allows the roots to develop in preparation for further growth in the nurseries.

1

Nurseries

In the nurseries, each banana plant is replanted into a bag of specially prepared growing medium where it is nurtured to further growth for eight weeks. This readies the banana plants for planting in the farms.

2

Land Preparation

Before transplanting the banana plants into the farms, the land is prepared according to the recommendations of our soil scientists for each unique farm. This process provides the plants with optimum growing conditions, taking into account ideal field layout, correct drainage and control to prevent soil erosion.

3

Planting and Cultivation

Each young banana plant is carefully planted by hand and looked after by our farmers and growers until they are ready for harvesting. Based on many years of production experience and strongly supported by our Dole research scientists, all of our agricultural practices are carried out with the objective of ensuring ideal crop nurturing and generation of high-quality bananas while keeping our workers safe and minimizing any impact on the environment. We operate managed farms and also source fruit from independent growers who work with us under long-term contractual arrangements. We provide our independent growers with technical support to ensure high standards are met at every step of the growing and production process.

4

Harvesting

To ensure our bananas reach shop shelves and consumers in optimum condition, the fruit is always picked green. This enables precise and proper ripening prior to reaching stores. As part of the harvesting process the fruit is cut from the stem and carried on a special conveyor system direct from the farm to the packing sheds.

5

Packing

In the packing sheds, the banana “hands” are removed from the stem and then washed thoroughly to ensure cleanliness. They can be packed as hands or cut into clusters or individual fingers and sometimes packed as “consumer packs” depending on customer requests which vary country by country. However, the Dole quality level is the same high standard regardless of market. To prevent bruising and damage via transport, special care in taken when packing the fruit into boxes.

6

Shipping

The packed bananas are loaded into refrigerated containers for land transportation from the packhouse to the port and then are either loaded onto Dole’s refrigerated ships or shipped directly in the same container to the market. Either way, the produce is kept at an optimal temperature during shipment.

7

Ripening and Distribution

Upon arrival in the market, ships and containers are unloaded and must pass the Dole quality assurance inspections and all national requirements for imported fruits. Subsequently our bananas are moved to ripening facilities and then onward to grocery stores. This schedule is carefully managed so as to provide tasty yellow fruit that delights in eating pleasure.
